Discover the Treasure of our Waters

By land or by sea, your fishing options abound in Indian River County  Whether you sink a line for bass, red snapper or snook, you’re sure to get hooked.

The Sebastian River Area offers the avid fisherman a variety of challenges from fresh water fishing to deep-sea adventures. Sebastian emerged as a small fishing village in the late 1890’s.

Sebastian Inlet is considered the premier saltwater fishing spot on Florida's east coast. Fishermen flock to the pier at Sebastian Inlet to catch snook, redfish, bluefish, flounder, snapper, grouper, sheepshead, permit, whiting, blues, Spanish mackerel, and various species of shark.

Sebastian Inlet also has a fishing museum, Sebastian Fishing Museum, which tells the history of the area's fishing industry.

The most popular fish to catch in the Atlantic Ocean off of the coast of Sebastian are dolphin, tuna, swordfish, grouper, snapper, wahoo, sailfish, cobia, barracuda, amberjack and other challenging catches.

Our waterways also offer great inshore fishing. The Indian River Lagoon and the St. Sebastian River have snook, redfish, trout, tarpon, and much more. In the City of Fellsmere, just west of Sebastian, you will find Blue Cypress Lake

(6,000-acre freshwater wilderness perfect for bass fishing and airboat rides), the Stick Marsh, and C-54 Canal which are known for their world famous bass fishing.

The Sebastian River Area has quite a few inshore and offshore fishing experts that you can hire for private charters. If you prefer to go with a big group, we have a few party and head boats that go deep sea fishing. During the summer months, there are numerous inshore and offshore fishing tournaments that attract fisherman from surrounding areas. Kayak fishing has also become very popular in the Sebastian River Area.

Fishing and hunting licenses are required. Divers, spear fishermen and trappers of marine life must have a saltwater license. Recreational licenses are available at the Tax Collector’s Office, sporting goods stores and other retailers who sell hunting or fishing equipment.  For fishing and hunting licenses information call 772-226-1343 or see www.irctax.com
